Hedwig Reisinger (German, 1903–1998) original oil on canvas of the Stone Bridge of Regensburg, circa 1930. The work captures the medieval stone bridge with its series of arches stretching across the Danube, framed by the rooftops and towers of the old city in the background. Rendered in a soft yet textured impressionist style.
The Stone Bridge of Regensburg, known as the Steinerne Brücke, is one of Germany’s most important medieval landmarks. Constructed between 1135 and 1146, the bridge extends over 300 meters with sixteen arches and served as the city’s only Danube crossing for more than 800 years. It became a vital link in medieval trade routes and is tied to enduring local legend, known as the “Devil’s Bridge” story. Today it remains the oldest surviving stone bridge in Germany
Hedwig Reisinger was a German painter recognized for her impressionistic landscapes and still lifes, often featuring historic European architecture, alpine scenery, and floral subjects. Her paintings are noted for their impasto brushwork and expressive palette, reflecting a refined Post-Impressionist style.
